The world’s foremost silhouette artist, Cindi Harwood Rose, will be making an appearance at Day One at 3490 California Street in San Francisco!

RSVP on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/470769516332609/

Cindi Harwood, a fourth generation artist and paper cutter, began drawing portraits as a child, and doing silhouettes as a teen. Her mother, Doris, was an architect, and paper cutter of known skills. Cindi took her talents to both Disney theme parks in order to earn her college degree in fine arts and communications at University of Texas. From the beginning, people where amazed at her speed, and unmatched details. Very few silhouette artists can master the interior cuts, so often they are solid black, and very generic. Also, few can do groupings.

Her fee will be $35 each person, with duplicate copies for only $10 a person, that way fathers, grandfathers, and uncles can have a silhouette, and this is less than a hand-made greeting card.

Plus, Cindi Harwood Rose, is acclaimed as the top silhouette artist in America. The silhouette historian, Peggy McClard recommends collecting Cindi Harwood Rose’s silhouettes, they will go up in value, as collectable. Some of her earlier paper profiles (she has snipped portraits for 40 years) have gone for a few hundred dollars!

Appointments must be made to reserve a slot with a $10 deposit. Call (415) 440-3291.

She will be at the store after school hours on June 14th, and in the morning on June 15th. All silhouettes will be mounted on 5 x 7 acid free paper.

Cindi will have acid-free mats for $5 available for sale, along with lovely picture frames from $12 to $35, less than retail for the quality she will carry.

Erica Rose has been active with the Aishel House in Houston which provides assistance to patients and families of any spiritual or religious belief with home-made kosher food, housing, babysitting, to those critically sick from all over the world who come to the renown Houston medical center for wellness.

She is also heading up The Rose Petals in various cities, for people in the 20’s and 30’s to be active in the non-profit world. Both ventures are due to her inspiration from her aunt, Holly Harwood Skolkin, who passed last year after a 15 year courageous battle with stage 4 cancer. This is a division of The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation 501 (c) (3). The foundation is a firm believer of the Aishel House, which constantly gives love and support to families and patients who have critical illness. Erica’s aunt Holly felt that her life was prolonged due to the ability to help others with cancer while she herself struggled with the illness, she took it as a health opportunity, and gave blessings during her entire life.

In this photo, Erica is with Shoshanna Traxler at a recent Aishel House fundraiser in Houston, Texas. Erica, known to her television admirers, for her quick wit, and designer tiaras she called T-Ericas, has her law degree, and currently taking time to do volunteer work, fundraising, appearances, and is working on a book.

To get involved with the Aishel House contact aishelhouse.org

It is a wonderful way to do a “mitzvah” or good deed of kindness to others, and at the same time raise your own holy spark.

Matthew Bone’s Print Release

Matthew Bone Limited Edition Giclee Print

Los Angeles based fine artist Matthew Bone, known for his oil painting portraits of adult starlets such as Aiden Starr, Kimberly Kane, Roxy Deville, Bailey Jay, Satine Phoenix and Belladonna has released his first set of giclee prints, featuring the enigmatic Belladonna.

Matthew Bone was born into and reared by a clan of Tuscan Raiders in Los Angeles. Raised on a diet of comic books, horror movies, and Pornography. Matthew injects a distinctive voice into his painting. Pride, lust, vengeance, the lurid underbelly of humanity, and the allegories that illustrate the consequences of its revelation have long been the focus of Matthew Bone’s work. By utilizing the conventions of pop culture, and its willingness to embrace artifice as the sincere, Matthew is able to create his own re-envisioned modern mythology.

Over the past 10 years, Matthew’s work has been collected by celebs such as Gerard Way, Alice Cooper, Jason Biggs and James Gunn. He has shown all over the world in Cannes, Berlin, NYC, Seattle, Los Angeles, Miami, Austin and London and is currently represented by Last Rites Gallery, NYC and La Luz De Jesus, LA.

“Growing up as a latchkey kid, time was filled with unmonitored viewing of porn, horror and sci-fi. By using the adult entertainment stars of today, I’m able to tap into the artificial world of the porn starlets that (de)formed my early ideas of sexuality and femininity. Through adult hindsight, these sensationalistic images are filtered into a post-modern commentary and exploration of our personal mythologies”

Matthew is currently working on his piece for a June 8th group show at Parlor Gallery in Asbury, NJ and his next show with Last Rites Gallery that will open in March of 2014, it will feature large format paintings from reference shot under blacklight to emulate deep sea bioluminescence as a parable for self evolution and further explore his aesthetic fascination with Wet and Messy fetish, portraiture and photorealism.

Recently, Silhouette Artist Cindi Harwood Rose was invited to do silhouettes at both the Sarah and James Polk Presidential Museum and the Thomas Jefferson family reunion as a special guest.

Cindi’s silhouette of President Thomas Jefferson.

Silhouettes at Monticello of Decendents of President Thomas Jefferson at the annual Thomas Jefferson Family Reunion:

“Thank you for your lovely artistry at the Monticello event. Carmen and I were delighted with the results.” – Carmen’s Nana, Evelyn Randolph

The famous paper art profile master raved: “I was recently invited to Monticello to do silhouettes of President Thomas Jefferson’s family reunion, and to tour the lovely grounds, and recreate history!

I am really enjoying visiting the former homes of the United States of America’s Presidents and doing their silhouettes, as well as their generations of family and patrons.”

Pictured here is Cindi’s silhouette of Cornelia Jefferson, President Jefferson’s granddaughter, an artist who taught drawing, painting and sculpture. She died in 1871 and was buried at Monticello.

C. H. Rose, famous silhouettest claimed, “I fell in love with Reston, Virginia, and Monticello! I loved the Thomas Jefferson family reunion, there were artists and architects, throughout the group, seven grandfathers ago.

What an honor to do silhouettes at our third President’s family reunion – It was overwhelming to be in such a warm environment of intellectual and artistic individuals who stay true to making the world a better place through their careers. Of note, many of the distinguished family chose lifestyles that promote the fine arts, living with environment conscious design, which is apparent in the lovely setting at Monticello. It is a destination, and it should be put on your “to visit list.” The rooms were intimate and small, which I adore, it was cozy! I would never want a large room, but oh, how I want those large closets, that were not popular in the 1700’s.

Thomas Jefferson is key to our declaration of Independence, and now we have proof, all men are created equal by G-d, we live in the best country, it does not matter if you are democratic or republican, T. J., was both! The reunion accepted all its descendants of all races, and each were a badge to describe who they descended from, other than me and my college roommate who came to enjoy our time together.

The silhouette wall shown (other than the ones I hold which are mine) were done by the Pantograph, which is a machine that took a photo profile, and shrunk it, and a family member than cut the silhouette from that. It is cheating, but is priceless, due to who she cut silhouettes of, and who they were. Even in the 1700’s there were not more than 28 true living silhouette artists (same as today) who could look, and cut the profile without a sketch, light, tracing, projector, and with the interior details, and groupings. It is a gift, and any real silhouette artist will tell you they feel the same way! Of course I brought some of my Vintage French silhouette paper, that is over 50 years old, that I purchased in bulk 30 years ago, not made anymore! I felt very connected with a family history of architects, engineers, artists, lawyers, doctors, good people trying to help others, doing causes to make the world better.”

Sarah Polk’s music book, used when she was 14 years old, shown above, is on display at Polk Presidential Hall’s exhibit “Sarah Polk: First Lady of Fashion” through July. “It is not known if the hand-inked book, dated 1818, was created by Sarah Polk or someone else,” curator Tom Price said. “But it does show she was familiar with the song ‘Hail to the Chief,’ pictured on the right-hand page. Interestingly, she began the tradition of using it as the theme song for the President of the United States.” Also pictured is Sarah Polk’s framed silhouette. You thought your family was complete, but now you want more children. There are steps you can take to make your dream a reality – and conceive a baby naturally following tubal reversal surgery.

Considering TR? Check out Ten Reasons to Have a Tubal Reversal Surgery here

Tubal reversal is considered the most effective way to become pregnant after a tubal ligation. It’s possible to become pregnant for a fraction of the cost of in vitro fertilization and often occurs with only three visits to the office. And tubal reversal surgery can produce multiple successful pregnancies.

The doctor you choose is the most important factor in determining your success. Dr. Bernard Rosenfeld has specialized in this area for over 30 years, performing thousands of tubal ligation reversal procedures with the highest successful pregnancy rates – over 80%.

His attention to detail and specialized training required to use ultra fine 10-0 sutures that promote better results and faster healing – generally reserved for delicate eye surgeries – continues to set him apart in his field.

Dr. Rosenfeld is sensitive to your feelings, perspectives and concerns. He treats his patients with respect. You deserve special treatment from your doctor, and Dr. Rosenfeld and his talented staff are committed to providing you with the BEST personalized, quality care.

Considering whether to choose IVF over Tubal Reversal surgery? Check out the facts:

Thousands of Babies! Read stories, testimonials and letters from happy Moms – click on the photo

Suprisingly, tubal reversal surgery is LESS EXPENSIVE and has a HIGHER SUCCESS RATE than IVF- costly and risky in-vitro fertilization. Here are some important facts to consider:

Modern advances in tubal reversal surgery now offers a higher overall successful pregnancy rate and long term results, making it a priority choice among patients looking to get the procedure done. And here’s the facts about the savings: tubal reversal costs only $6,400 with no additional fees, while IVF costs over $15,000 for every cycle. Insurance doesn’t cover the full costs of IVF, and more than one cycle may be required for the patient. The total price of $6,400 for tubal reversal surgery not only includes the surgery but all the preceding and post procedure functions, including hospital charges, pain relief, operating and recovery room, ultrasound, pre and post-op visits, medications, and more. If after reviewing your tubal sterilization medical records Dr. Rosenfeld feels that you would have a higher success rate with IVF over tubal reversal, he will recommend the best IVF center in your area. Dr. Rosenfeld will always be 100% honest with you, because the ultimate goal is for you to have a baby.

Cindi (formerly Harwood) Rose began doing this art, after discovering at 8 years old that her portraits of animals and people were in high demand. At nearly 16, she answered an ad in a local newspaper that a Disney owned art concession was looking for a cashier. Taking her portraits to the interview, she immediately was hired to be a portrait artist, at the then, Astroworld. While taking a park tour, she saw a “real silhouette artist” who did not use a light, projector, or pencil, who merely looked at a person, and in a few minutes, cut out their likeness from 4 x 5 thin, black paper. “I can do that” she said out loud. The art manager laughed at her, handed her the scissors and paper, and said for her to try her luck at it. The then, teen, cut out his profile, and to the manager’s surprise, it was better than the silhouette artist they had working for them. They immediately fired the other artist on the spot, and told Cindi, she was to be the new silhouette artist.

Cindi’s work was so exceptional that they flew her to renown Disneyland Anaheim Park to work some in the summers, throughout high school and college. After graduating The University of Texas with honors in art and communications, Cindi worked at Disneyworld, as the silhouette artist. She has silhouetted presidents of many countries, ambassadors, prime ministers, movie and rock stars, and has made the world record in speed, and accuracy. Currently, Ripley’s Believe it or Not is talking to her about doing an art show for them. In addition, the top historian on silhouette collecting, Peggy McClard, only recognizes Cindi Harwood Rose’s profile silhouettes as collectable. Those done over 40 years ago, often go for many hundreds of dollars. There are only a few extraordinary silhouette artists in the world, and in the United States Cindi Harwood Rose is considered the top.

Children’s Silhouettes by C.H. Rose

Paper is considered a great Valentine’s Gift, but a Cindi Rose silhouette shows much thought into your gift, that will be an heirloom, and family keepsake, to last generations to come. C. Rose can also do silhouettes of pets from photos e-mailed to the store ahead of time, or computer printed and brought in. Cindi does people in person, as the camera does “lie” and Cindi sees more than a camera does. The art was popular before photography, and the greatest silhouette artist capture personality and profile, as C. H. Rose does.

Children do not have to sit still, and hair and clothing can be “fixed” in the silhouette. Cindi will also graciously leave off a double chin when asked in her artwork. Check out silhouettesbycindi.com to see her work, videos, and many articles about her.

Story and How to Video By silhouette artist Cindi Harwood Rose

DIY Silhouette art by hand – watch the How To Video

The beauty of a silhouette is passed down from generation to generation. If you are a gifted portrait artist, especially keen with the profile, you have a good shot at being a real silhouette artist. Not one who Photoshops, or traces a shadow off a wall, but a person, who can see features in comparison to other features, and in proportion. You can start by drawing a profile, around 4 inches high, and cutting it out, or taking profile photos and cutting them out. Once you figure out how to draw with scissors, practice with real people and pets. Wrapping paper is a good medium to begin with, or computer paper. If you want to make if official, spray paint one side black, but use the white side to cut from. You can also buy real French silhouette paper on the internet, or at your favorite art supply store. Barber and surgical scissors make great tools to use, but are costly. You want to make sure the scissors you use have a straight edge, so that you can control your cuts. I like to start cutting from the bottom up, which is different than the way I draw. For fun, use colored backgrounds and junk mail. It is wonderful what you can do with the silhouette and your imagination.

Silhouette Artist Cindi Rose snips a paper portrait by hand

Paper-cutting was discovered in northwestern China around 386-586 AD with Chinese embroidery patterns, for the royal dynasties. Silhouette-cutting was associated with the royal courts. It was not uncommon to have a silhouettist employed, capturing every movement of the entire court. Some paper-cutting artists, told stories, such as Hans Christian Anderson.

The name silhouette, is from Etienne de Silhouette, a French minister of Finance, who was dismissed in 1759, after 9 months in office. He had cut out pensions and luxuries, thus, items “cut-out” or minimal in expense, reminded people of him. Silhouettes were the way to have a profile made by an artist, without having to have a portrait drawn.

Oddly, a true silhouette, hand-cut by an artist, is more difficult than drawing a portrait, and all silhouette artists can draw portraits, but not all portrait artists can do silhouettes free-hand. There are only around 25 to 50 real silhouette profilist artists in the world, and hand-cut silhouettes, not computer generated ones, only become more valuable in time. It is not necessary to have little embellishments in your silhouettes. A good silhouette artist, will not give everyone the same hair-do and face, they will make you look like yourself, with the details that express your style.

When I was a little child, I would sit with my talented mother, and cut-out Valentine’s, snow-flakes, paper dolls, flowers, and butterflies. My mother, Doris Harwood, a paper-cutting artist and architectural designer would also draw portraits, front and side-view. Little did she know that this practice in contour would prepare her to be a natural in the fine art of English and French profile hand-cutting, an art difficult to master, that only a few handfuls of fine artists, are prolific at. You can look on-line at The Guild of Paper cutters and see a listing of the world’s best silhouette artists and paper cutters from the past 300 years, and samples of their works.

As a natural artist, skilled in life drawing, I got a job in my early teens at an amusement park drawing portraits. While taking a tour, I saw a silhouette artist—someone cutting out profiles from black paper freehand without sketching or using a light—and said “I can do that.” Laughed at, I was handed scissors, and thin black paper. Freehand, without a sketch, or light, I cut out the manager’s profile, in less than two minutes, and the prior silhouette artist was fired on the spot. What I did most, was compare each feature, the same way I would when I draw. I used my scissors as I would “a thumb” to eyeball the spaces between the features in the subject’s profile.

Silhouette cutting for the Disney art concessionaire became my summer job, throughout high school and The University of Texas where I graduated in fine art and journalism. Later, I worked for Disney World and Disneyland, where I broke park production records doing 600 silhouettes in a day. Soon, I found myself doing silhouettes all over the world, for many celebrities, families, formal affairs, television shows, galleries, department stores, and collections. I made a world speed record in 1982, 144 silhouettes of 144 individuals cut-out in one hour, timed by The San Antonio Express Newspaper.

On the last Friday of November, Continuum’s Live Art Series Opening Night occurred at Avant Garden. The performances kicked off a 6-month residency at Avant Garden that will include workshops along with performances through May 2013.

In the attic, Militia “Malice” Tiamat performed Know Thy Self. In this piece, audience members experienced it one at a time. A guide greeted me at the stairs and instructed me to form a single question and hold it in my mind until it resonated through my body, until I felt it in my feet. Then I was ready and could enter. In the midst of fog and disco style lights, I ascended the stair into the attic. I sat before “Malice” and asked my questions. She stared at me for an instant and then answered confidently and calmly, “No, you’re not. Not now. Not until spring.”

I’ve never given fortune tellers or futurist much credence. I still don’t. But Tiamat’s performance had a satisfying feeling of mystery and possibility. The Jean Michel Jarre atmosphere didn’t hurt.

“It was an honor to be nominated and a bit of a shock to be selected a winner among so many performance artists whom I respect and admire. I was inspired to return to performance art expression after an almost 10 year hiatus after the LoneStar performance explosion and of course I am glad now that I did; the performance at Avant Garden would not have been possible without the fabulous laser lights provided by Steve Boriak of SMB and the generous assistance of Tod Greenlaw, looking forward to seeing everyone again on May 3rd at Avant Garden for the final performance of the series with Continuum.” – Militia “Malice” Tiamat
